Vaporwave: style and nostalgia

On the topic of the 80s and style inspiration… comes one of my favorite surges of artwork: vaporwave. I came across this term on Tumblr, while I was probably going through a wormhole of link-bait, stumbling across all these subterranean style cultures, like: health goth, sea punk, pastel goth, and vaporwave. Sea punk in particular originated in the Tumblr cyber-sphere 2010-2011 ish as a style and 3D art genre. Similarly, vaporwave came across as this amalgamation of 1980s-1990s Internet memes highlighting the early video game world, Art Deco designs, and electronic music. I don’t know what that all means, but I’m drawn to it and it has a place in our present digital world. So, here are a few of my favorite feeds that inspire me:

When I was a kid, outside from school and ballet class, my escape was pretty digital. I played my brother’s OG Gameboy, then Gameboy Color (atomic purple!) and in 2000 I recieved Pokemon Silver. The rest is history, I was a Pokemon MASTER all the way through Nintendo DS when SoulSilver came out. So, the reason why this Instagram has an impact is its digitally romantic landscapes, city scapes, and nostalgic throwback scenery. Especially, throwing in Sailor Moon here and there as well. I loved the floppy disc picture (above) because, yes, only a 80s or 90s kid would know what that is.

I legit want to blow this graphic up onto my soon-to-be office wall. Seriously, I don’t know how many weekends I went to my best friend’s house for a sleepover and we would play hours and hours of N64. Specifically: Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Mario Tennis, Mario Party, and Paper Mario. This was a time when we would even go out of our way to RENT video games. This system is ground breaking still and the stories that have come from Nintendo I hold near and dear to my heart. I didn’t own one until later on in my teens. I specifically remember riding with my Dad on his motorcycle to a pawn shop to pick up a used system for $30 and found some games. So, I gave Instagram a follow for its pop of video game nostalgia, from Nintendo to Playstation and everywhere in between. I also still own my system and am on the hunt for pawned games.

I came across this lovely amalgamation of clothing and artwork all inspired by the Miami Vice-esque-neon-lights while I was on the hunt for artwork. This brand is all about wearing this aesthetic and you all know I love streetwear, so I had to add this to my follows. Their website is under the name Vapor95 (great homage to Windows 95, I had that for a hot minute in my home!) and they sell a bunch of different separates. There are leggings, cropped leggings, joggers, hoodies, graphic tees, crop tops, and so many other accessories. You know I’m shopping those fanny packs… Check these guys out! All their product is produced in LA.

What are some of your favorite fashion feeds?! Do you have any suggestions for me?

XOXO.
