The Southwest Charm of Scottsdale

Since we travelled several times last year… Los Angeles, New Orleans, Seattle, Chicago,  and back to Seattle… we put the breaks on the year 2019. But, the hustle keeps going. With one last trip to start 2019 off, Phoenix would be our last scheduled travel destination this year.. (of course that is subject to change with moving careers) We wanted to see the Royal Rumble live, check that off the list, and explore Scottsdale for a quick weekend getaway.

Saturday Morning

We booked a very early flight… (I laugh to myself in the wee hours of the morning thinking..why do we always do this?) We left before dawn in freezing Las Vegas for a 6:30AM flight. But, here’s why. It’s a quick 45 min flight to Phoenix where there was slightly more warmth and a full day free to roam. We made it to Phoenix around 8AM in the morning to explore Scottsdale, checkin, brunch it up and meet up with fellow Twitter friends.

I had been eyeing this resort on Instagram for years since we’ve lived in the desert. The Saguaro Hotels has one destination hotel in Palm Springs and one in Scottsdale. Both are known for their color blocking design, retro architecture, poolside rooms and eclectic artwork.

Both hotels turn the volume up when summer hits and their pool season gets on a Vegas level. When the summer season begins, their pool deck supplies a DJ on weekends, street food and frozen pool beverages. And fun fact: Splash House is a well known house music festival out in Palms Springs every June and August offering hotel packages, one including The Saguaro in Palms Springs.

However, it was not exactly warm enough for these Vegas locals to strip down and take a dip. So, we dropped our bags off and wandered over to Old Town Scottsdale for some breakfast.

The number one perk about The Saguaro Hotel location is that it is walking distance to Old Town, which is lined with cute shops, bars and restaurants. It has a Westworld kind of vibe with wood saloon style buildings. Our first stop was a short walk to the Daily Dose Old Town Bar & Grill for breakfast and some morning cocktails. Adam was not a fan of the Bloody Mary’s, but I was a huge fan of the different flavored mimosas and the fact that you opt for a double. If we’re labelling, it’s basically a lady’s tallboy.

They had lots of vegetarian and a few vegan options, (now I can see why wrestler’s Bri and Bryan lived in Phoenix) as well as the classics and sweet staples. I had a veggie breakfast wrap with fruit. Perfect ten for me. It had all the good stuff: house grains, egg white, smoked cheddar, mushroom, avocado, pico de gallo inside a chipotle tortilla.

Full and buzzin’ early, we headed across the street at the sight of a tiki bar… unfortunately Hula’s Modern Tiki was not open yet. So we opted for Pattie’s First Ave. Lounge across the street. A neighborhood staple, the original owner is duh, Pattie. Inside, there are family heirlooms, masonry and dollar bills all over the wall with love notes, travel dates, random memories and pieces of history. It’s friendly, big enough for groups and $3 PBR.

We laid by the pool and read, napped, digested for a while until our room was ready, then it was off Olive & Ivy, where we had lunch reservations. In Vegas, we both work for Culinary Dropout, a division of Fox Restaurant Concepts. After one year with the company, they mail out a thank you card with a gift of a meal for two at any of their concepts. From the Saguaro Hotel, we took a short walk to Waterfront, a shopping and dining destination where many of our concepts reside.

Olive & Ivy… a beautiful Mediterranean patio garden with hints of French Riviera.

Between the two of us, we had quite the spread. Adam ordered an Old Fashion and I had some sort of grapefruit Paloma. Super summery beverage, but at least Arizona had enough warmth for the best seats on the patio. We started off with their signature bread with basil pesto starter and two of their kale salads.

For entrees, we ordered one short rib flatbread for the table and one margarita flatbread to go to have in the hotel room later. We were still satiated from our brunch earlier, so we snacked on everything we could and took home the rest. For dessert, I took my server’s recommendation for a chocolate peanut buttercup crème brûlée. Oh man, was it rich, but so good. Overall, this is a phenomenal spot to lose sense of time and spend an entire afternoon at. All I need is a slight breeze, sunshine, and a cold beverage. We did not check out their marketplace attached to the restaurant, but from what I hear there is a small cafe with fresh pastries, coffee, espresso drinks and gelato selections.

Later that evening…

Our Twitter meet-up had a slight change of plans due to the Scottsdale Culinary Dropout being so packed! So, we thought on our feet and took our bartender’s recommendation for The Coach House Tavern in downtown Scottsdale. It’s known for being one of the oldest bars and for its decked out Christmas lights that stay up through the new year. And we we’re lucky enough that it was still literally LIT up. Makes it easy to spot for visitors and it lights up the whole place, which is open-air indoor and outdoor. Everyone who was in town for Royal Rumble on Twitter showed up! And many of them travelled from downtown Phoenix, a 15-20 minute drive to Scottsdale… so it really goes to show the impact of responding and messaging online to REAL people. You will grow a group, a following, or better yet, a community in the ether.

Photo: This was taken post-Royal Rumble. We made it back to Old Town via light rail to Tempe, then a short Uber. This small late night bar and restaurant is walking distance from The Saguaro and was the ONLY place open still serving food late at night on a Sunday. I highly recommend the AZ/88, just from that fact, but they are known for their creative martinis and modern American food.

Sunday was mostly spent getting to the Phoenix area and Royal Rumble shenanigans. There simply wasn’t enough time this weekend to fit everything in with us Ubering around to get places. So, I would have to say despite the short trip, I very much enjoyed our employer’s hospitality, the different cuisines, The Saguaro Hotel and the nostalgia of Old Town. Until next time, Arizona! Back to the other desert…

Oh yeah and seeing Royal Rumble LIVE! It’s always the most exciting pay per view and you never know who is going to show up or who you will run into…
